One of the best (albeit rarest) parts of my job is getting to work closely with some of the world’s most well-known drag queens. It feels even better when they’re helping your team create a project for a great cause and you get to spend some quality time actually getting to know who they really are under all the makeup…
In early June, after months of planning and organization, I was lucky enough to get to fly to New York to work on a fun green screen video project with Alyssa Edwards, BenDeLaCreme and Bob The Drag Queen (more on that below). Talk about a whole lot of personality in one room!
Here’s a behind-the-scenes photo collage I created for the @Dragaholic Instagram:
The project, which is scheduled to be released in October, is an interactive campaign for This Free Life (a new LGBTQ anti-smoking campaign created by the FDA). I’m not sure how much I can reveal about the project at the moment, but I promise you that all three of these queens brought their A game. (When the campaign launches I will to share more, for those of you who are interested.)
After a 12-hour day on set, which saw me running around like a mad mad, I was exhausted. There was only one thing I could say about it all:
There were so many great parts of the day that I will remember forever… from chatting with BenDeLaCreme in his dressing room as he transformed from “Ben” to “DeLa,” to getting to do an impromptu photoshoot (special thanks to Garrett Matthew!) with one of my all-time favorite queens, Alyssa Edwards:
It all felt so surreal…
Then, after the long work day was over, the queens were exhausted. Bob headed home, Ben went back to his hotel to take a nap, and Alyssa started to come down from her Red Bull high. But the night wasn’t over just yet…
Nothing beats a long day of work more than a delicious, fried diner meal:
I was blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take both Alyssa and Ben out to dinner. From an assortment of fried appetizers to a mouth-watering chicken parmesan main course and (of course) dessert, we all enjoyed a hearty meal and spilled some secrets *tongue pop*. Talk about an out-of-body experience!
After walking the boys back to their hotel, I strolled down Fashion Avenue back to my hotel room with a dorky ear-to-ear smile glued to my face.
